NATURE

The Verdon gorges

The Verdon is considered to be one of the most beautiful canyons in Europe. It has been a protected natural site since 1990, and is classified as a "Grand Site de France".

There are two different road routes that you can take through the Verdon gorges to discover the magnificent and unforgettable landscapes of the Verdon: one to the north, on the right bank, takes you from Castellane to Moustiers-Sainte-Marie along the D952, and the other to the south, on the left bank, takes you from Aiguines to Castellane, via the D71, D90 and D995.

 

 

Verdon Regional Natural Park

Verdon Regional Natural Park has set up a reception point in Castellane designed especially for activities in the heart of nature, particularly hiking in the Verdon area. Verdon eco-wardens are there to answer all your questions and raise awareness of this rich natural heritage.

Admire one of the largest birds in Europe!
In the summer, you can join a wildlife leader to observe these spectacular birds at the reintroduction site and to discover the local flora and fauna.

Lac de Castillon, Verdon

Castillon lake

Just near Castellane, you can discover a beautiful stretch of water in an unspoilt natural environment. You can enjoy a range of different water sports here, including: canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing, waterskiing, and pedaloeing. The swimming area is supervised.

 

Chaudanne lake

A long, meandering ribbon, just downstream from Castillon on the river... Fishing enthusiasts and hikers will just love with this beautiful lake.

 

Sainte Croix lake

Discover the pearl of the Verdon, Sainte Croix lake, and the entrance to Verdon grand canyon! This real pearl of the Verdon is in exceptional surroundings right in the heart of the regional park.

The village of Castellane

Castellane is located in Verdon Regional Natural Park and is in the heart of the Haute-Provence Natural Geological Reserve.…
The village is overlooked by a "Roc": a towering limestone cliff that is 184 metres high. Enjoy a beautiful 30-minute walk to the chapel of Notre Dame du Roc. From the terrace, you will have stunning views of the Tour Pentagonale, the town and its ramparts, Pont Napoléon, and the entrance to the Verdon gorges.

Also worth visiting in Castellane: The ruins of Petra Castellana, St Victor's church, the Tour pentagonale, the Fontaine aux Lions, the Pont du Roc, the Porte de l'Annonciade, and the Tour de l'Horloge.

Moustiers Sainte-Marie


At the gateway to Verdon Grand Canyon, Moustiers Sainte-Marie, is classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France.

The village is at the crossroads of the magnificent site of the Verdon gorges and the Lavender route, which passes across Valensole plateau. It is known throughout the world for its delicate and uniquely decorated earthenware.

The Route Napoléon

Running from Golfe-Juan on the Côte d'Azur to Grenoble, the capital of the Dauphiné, the Route Napoléon winds through over 300 km of exceptional countryside.


In 1815, Emperor Napoleon stopped in Castellane on his way back from the island of Elba. You can see the commemorative plaque at 34 rue Nationale.
